Burgdorf station (Bern)
The Burgdorf station serves as the central transfer link for the human-powered mobility network and the public transport network of the city of Burgdorf and the Emmental region. Around 7,000 commuters use the Burgdorf station on a daily basis. 360 arrivals and departures of city and regional buses transport another 4,500 commuters each day. A cycle ring lane runs through the entire city and guides pedestrians and cyclists to the station. For the Burgdorf station, 2008 was the starting point for several of its development steps. In 2009, the deconstruction of the former terminus station for the Mittelland regional transport made it possible to convert, at low cost, the centre platform including roof into a temporary bus station for the eight city and regional bus lines. The buses which previously had to line up on the Bahnhofstrasse can now stop on this well-laid out area.
The same year, the BLS conversion to twin tracks helped to fill an important gap for human-powered mobility in the city. By building a bicycle overpass along the BLS railways between Steinhof station and Burgdorf main station, Burgdorf’s western quarters Steinhof, Gsteig and Meiefeld were linked directly to the city centre and the station.
At the same time as these projects were implemented, a competition for the re-design of the bus station and the station’s square was carried out. Its aim is to upgrade the area around the station, which is part of the cantonal development focus for Burgdorf station, to a central focus in terms of urban planning and architecture, and thus to create impulses on the development of adjacent areas. In 2010, a pre-project was drawn up, but due to the city’s difficult financial situation, the project has since been suspended. The city, however, remains keen to implement several subprojects in order to promote human-powered mobility around Burgdorf station.
In 2010, the expansion of the Bike & Rail offer started. In 2012, the new bicycle station as mobility centre will open at Burgdorf station. In 2012 and the years to come, more Bike & Rail parking spaces will be created. In 2011, along with the renovation of the station building and the platform underpass, the station’s pedestrian guidance will be made more secure and attractive, and a new signage concept will be used to complement it.
