Thanks to the new Bürger Pass, «Inhabitants of the holiday republic » enjoy even more liberty as of summer 2012 – as, following a single night’s stay in the beautiful Saastal Valley, you can take the liberty of using all mountain rail (excl. summer ski regions) as well as PostBus services throughout the valley without paying a cent!
Starting in Brig, the Saas-Fee Route leads via Visp into the Saastal Valley and on to Saas-Fee. Visit the Old Town of Brig, and naturally the imposing Stockalper Castle. This you can also do comfortably seated on the small « Simplon Express» that takes you round the town and best sights. Brig is home to Switzerland’s biggest open-air thermal baths; where guests delight in its healing waters along with invigorating under-current moving pool and fast-track slide. (PostBus stop Brigerbad, Thermalbad). And from Visp, you have the choice of numerous excursions that lead to the Upper Valais (PostBus stop Visp, Bahnhof Süd) – such as a visit to the weekly Friday afternoon «Pürumärt» traditional farmers market.
Saas-Grund, too, offers a varied program of possible year-round activities (PostBus stop Saas-Grund, Post). From here, you can make your way to the Saas Höhenweg path and enjoy a scenic hike along the Saastal Valley. The Hohsaas skiing area (3100 m. above sea level) is yet another highlight, as it opens up breathtaking views; and of course the traffic-free Saas-Fee glacier village offers unlimited winter-sports fun. (PostBus stop Saas-Fee, Busterminal). This «Pearl of the Alps » is also the place where you find yourself surrounded by 13 of the 4000 and more meter-high peaks; as well as the place where you discover the exciting adventure woods, sled run, tame marmots and typical Saastal Valley culture at the Saas Museum. You reach the Mittelallalin in a flash with the Metro Alpin, where you can ski at any time of the year, and in Europe’s highest-lying revolving restaurant, on a clear day you even get to see the lights of Milan. And on visiting the Ice Pavillion, you can quite rightly say you’ve visited the world’s largest of its kind and practically rubbed shoulders with the Fee Glacier!
